Glassmorphism in user interfaces

[ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS]

I’ve been mindlessly scrolling on Dribbble and Instagram lately to scope out what the predicted UI trends for 2021 will be and without a doubt, Glassmorphism has been a consistent leading contender. Perhaps it is because Apple introduced this style into the recent Big Sur update…

Glassmorphism is a frosted-glass effect achieved using a background blur that applies a subtle transparency. This visual addition has made its way into designs paired with vibrant gradient backgrounds to spotlight and highlight certain objects. When used “correctly” it creates awe, but like Neumorphism, a predicted trend for 2020, it poses accessibility issues.

What are your thoughts on this trend? Will you be incorporating trying Glassmorphism in your designs?

No, your design isn’t bad, it’s just CRAP — has consistency, repetition, alignment, and proximity! Learn how these techniques can help you elevate your work.

How to set up an LLC as a freelancer (and why it’s a no-brainer)

[ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS]

An LLC is a limited liability company which is a layer of protection for a personal business. It allows you to not be held personally liable for any debts or legal liabilities incurred by the business. But what got me was the tax advantages — I’m all ears for saving money.

The initial steps are pretty simple:

  1. Fill out a basic form about you and your business.
  2. File a document called “articles of Organization”.
  3. Get an EIN or Employer Identification Number.

So you might be freelancing and forming an LLC seems daunting but LLCs were actually made for short-term projects! Say you’re starting your small design business, you’ll be able to customize the operating agreements to suit your needs.

Why Everyone Always Hates Redesigns, Even When They’re Good

[ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS]

This article made me chuckle a bit because I’ve been bickering about Instagram’s recent redesign where they assume that I want Reels and Shopping in my bottom nav. I’m not entirely sure that I’ll get over my disgust for the time-sucks and money-traps that they just added but I digress.

Contrary to my dislike for Instagram’s change, people generally have a negative reaction to redesign because of the psychological dislike for change and uncertainty. A new layout requires time and effort in relearning the tool and an interruption in the acquainted workflow.
