Last week we finally finished a UX/UI project about safe medication disposal. The reason we are doing this topic is because I just read a news from an article in Pharmacy Practice News. The article pointed out : Ca Rx has a Billion-Dollar Drug Waste Problem!

When we did the user interview, we found out there are always medication leftover due to overprescription by doctors. Medication waste is costly to health system. The other issue of leftover pills is that children or pets at home always ingests wrong medication by accident. 1 child every 8 minutes visits ER for ingesting wrong medicine. Human medications, including over the counter & prescription drugs can poison your dogs & cats. Pet Poison Helpline top 10 human medications that poison your pets.

The unsafe medication disposal also has tremendously negative impact on the environment. In freshwater habitats, where drug residues are most commonly found, the research found 75% of fish and amphibians had been lost.

With the screener and user interviews, we came up with our persona Eva:

Also we came up with our problem statement:

Adults with young children often have leftover medications that they are unsure how to manage.Eva feels anxious about keeping unused medications for long periods of time, but guilty about throwing them in the trash.

How might we help Eva ensure that her unused medications are disposed of safely without sacrificing convenience or the environment?

Our solution is to provide Eva with a platform where she can learn how to dispose of medication safely and efficiently.

With the platform, she will be able to locate safe medication drop boxes nearest to her with our safe medication locator tool.

We did some low-fidelity and mid-fidelity usability testings:

Then finally move to High-Fidelity design:

On boarding page is to help emotionally engage the users and educate them the importance of safe medication disposal.

On boarding page

A search bar design on the home page is to help people directly find the solution how and where to safely dispose specific medication. Existing websites either have too much information that is difficult to digest and navigate or contain only a subset of information or simply link to other places. We want to provide single source of information for our users.

Home Page

After typing in the name of medication, Lifecycle will tell you the informatin of the medication, the nearest drop off location and tell you the safe home disposal methods if you can’t make it to the nearest drop box.

Most of the users think our hi-fi design is simple and straightforward. It’s informative, educated and easy to use.

“The website feels so light-hearted. It doesn’t look intimidating like other medication websites” by User 3

This is the summary of my P4 project in General Assembly. I am really looking forward to my next project!

If you find this article helpful, please 👏👏👏 so others can find it as well.
