Purpose of Tooltip Text

Tooltip text are provided on UI to serve the following purposes:

  • Inform the user/audience of a built-in Bullish feature
  • Inform the user/audience of an industry term
  • Inform the user/audience on what UI data/metrics are being displayed.
    - For instance, in the case of a data-rich dashboard, inform the user what the data points are, what metrics are being displayed, and so on.

In short, the general purpose of a tooltip text is to fill in the knowledge gaps of users/audience during a user journey by providing necessary information.

Anatomy of Tooltip Text

Tooltips should be:

  • Concise
    - Not exhaustive
    - Can contain fragmented text as opposed to a fully constructed text in case of UI space constraints
  • Clear
    - Use plain language
    - Avoid complicated sentence constructions ●
  • Informative
    - Provide useful info
    - Fill in knowledge gaps as necessary
    - Call out unique features of the Bullish platform
    - Use reference links through the link text Learn More.

Tooltip Text Length

For Bullish UI tooltips, standardize the text length to:

● Min 1 sentence and max 2 sentences
○ In some cases, more than 2 sentences may be necessary. Use discretion and make sure the purpose of the tooltip is being fulfilled ● Reference link to Help Center (optional)

Tooltip Formula

Tooltip text = (<= two sentences)+("reference link text"|optional)

Tooltip text = Less than or equal to 2 sentences + reference link to Help Center if necessary.

● 1 sentence = ~ 15–25 words
A tooltip text should be informative/descriptive in nature, not instructive. If step-by-step instructions are needed, document the instructions in the Help Center and link the tooltip text to the specific section.

Anatomy of Tooltip Host Text

What is a tooltip host text? It is the UI text that hosts a tooltip. See an example of a Tooltip Host Text below:
