UXCamp DC was launched in January 2010 with the intent find other people curious about user experience design. Since then, UXCamp DC has become more than just an annual event, it’s become a community of curious designers eager to share with and learn from each other.

Why is UXCamp DC an unconference?

Before launching UXCamp DC, we attended other unconferences. Barcamps were already a thing, e.g. WordCamp and UXCamp London. We set out to produce the first UXCamp in the US, not just DC. We found the energy and openness of these events refreshing and great way to hear uniques voices and ideas related to design. We found our tribe and over the past 10 years built a community of curios designers who come back year after year.

How does UXCamp DC use Dunbar’s number?

According to Dunbar’s number, there is a cognitive limit to the number of people with whom one can maintain stable social relationships. That number is 150. We believe that our success and longevity is due to keeping attendee numbers to a max of 150 to allow people to network, converse, and make lasting connections.

Since we’re going virtual this year, we’re limiting the number of attendees to 75 in hopes that we can keep the same UXCamp DC vibe. We want to hold true to the spirit maximizing social connections.

What’s the day like?

You will get a chance to sign up to present a topic the night before. We go online at 9:30 am. You’ll introduce yourself and pitch your session topic in the morning. Every hour on the hour, starting at 10 am, breakout rooms will be set up for three simultaneous 45-minute sessions with 15 minute breaks. We will have an open breakout room just for hanging out, meeting new people, and discussing what you learned in a session you attended.

Schedule
9:30 am — Welcome and morning announcements
10:00 am — Group one (3 sessions)
11:00 am — Group two (3 sessions)
12:00 pm — Group three (3 sessions)
