Select the sample well for the success of the research.

Definitions

  • Sampling is the process of selecting a representative group from the population under study.
  • The target population is the total group of individuals from which the sample might be drawn.
  • A sample is the group of people who take part in the investigation. The people who take part are referred to as “participants”.

The reliability of the research depends on the way we choose our participants. In any kind of research, we have a scope — a target population we want to study. However, studying about every single one in the population is indisputably impossible (like, imagine you have to study the whole group of teenagers in your country!), so sampling was born to help researchers study a smaller group of representatives of the population. The more representative the sample, the more confident the researcher can be that the results can be generalized to the target population.

Types of sampling

There are typically 2 types of sampling: Probability Sampling and Non-probability Sampling.
