Sagi Avinash Varma, BITS Pilani has successfully completed his two-month internship as a Product Engineer at Coherendz India Private Limited from Feb ‘2014- March ‘2014. He is now working as a UI Developer at MySmartPrice. He shares his internship experience below:

(1)What are your learnings during the internship?

Getting “literally” practical — Lets say, to complete a project, one needs to know 10 things. One can’t complete it having known just 9 things. So I learnt all 10 things to complete it and became knowledgeable to complete tasks of that kind. If one reads a book, one will learn 20 things but they are from scattered topics and they might not be knowing all the 10 things required to do that particular task.

Writing clean code, repeatable code, easily collaborate-able code with back end.

Stack-overflow — Not that it was taught , but it was essential to get answers as fast as possible because work stops. I now go through Stack-overflow like a daily habit.

Confidence — I was always confident and happy that I am not sitting at home worrying whats next career wise but learning everyday and night, I reached a stage where I felt I am knowledgeable to get a job.

Support — My initial thought before joining as intern at Coherendz: Many people think paid internship is cool, its not because one looses the right to ask help when its needed. This was a free internship so I could ask “how to” stuff whenever I wanted because if they didnot explain, work is stalled and I become a burden to them. Thats the stipend they pay, spend their time to teach me what I dont know.

After internship, I feel my “must have” knowledge has grown 10 times just because I was shown the right “direction” on what needs to be learnt and what not. Cool stuff comes up every day but one needs to learn whats used in workplace. I just learnt what stuff is used in workplace which is priceless learning.

(2) What do you like the most here?

  1. You guys spent time to teach me.
  2. My first connection to a company which started 2 years back with Sanjeev Kosaraju turned out to be strong connection something I can look back for a long time.

(3) What are your dislikes here?

The live project that I worked on got trashed, my bad luck I could not put it in my portfolio.

(4) How do you think the internship experience has helped you in your career?

All I needed was “direction”. I could crack any job interview after the internship because recruiters don’t expect you to be brilliant in every aspect but just on the stack they use.
