5 Ways to Go Green on Vacation
Enjoying your next vacation does not have to mean giving up on environmentally sound practices. As “going green” has become a global concern, more and more tourism actors are offering eco-friendly alternatives. You can make choices throughout your stay that protect the earth, just as you would at home.
1. Stay at a Green Hotel
Look for accommodation that has made a commitment to the environment. They may have energy-saving appliances and light fixtures, recycling programs, or only provide drinking water with meals upon request. You can search for Green Seal certified hotels on that organization’s website, or just ask the hotel customer service desk about their green practices before booking.
2. Eat Local Food
Buying local is a great idea anywhere. Food that had a shorter trip from farm to table left a smaller footprint on the environment than food that had to be transported great distances. By eating local food, you also have a deeper experience of the culture you are visiting.
3. Choose Emission-Free Transport
The best way to see the sights is to walk or cycle, but even if you cannot have a self-powered vacation you can protect the earth. Some car rental companies have fleets of eco-friendly vehicles. Local public transportation, such as trains, can help you to avoid the environmental cost of flying. If you do fly to your destination, choose a non-stop flight.
4. Limit Waste
Shopping and hydration are an important part of travel. Carry a reusable shopping bag and water bottle to avoid single-use plastics. Eat in whenever possible, instead of carrying and disposing of take-out containers. If you can recycle, do; put your beverage container in the right bin so it doesn’t end up in the trash.
5. Protect the Local Environment
Many tourist hotspots have sensitive ecosystems. Respect this by following local laws and regulations. Hawaii recently banned certain sunscreens to protect coral reefs. In some countries, endangered animal products are sold as souvenirs. Do not buy them; that’s to comply with the law and to maintain a green ethos.
Perhaps the best part of a vacation is the chance to have fun and engage in a new set of experiences. That does not have to come at the expense of the environment. Use your sound judgment while out of town or abroad, as you do now in your own neighborhood.
