What’s in Your Carry-on Bag?
Remember when you were a kid and flying was fun? Times have changed! These days, decreasing legroom and increasing instances of air-rage make even a best-case scenario flight stressful. A worst-case scenario flight (sitting near a screaming baby or being stranded on the runway for hours) can feel like absolute torture. That’s why it’s essential to be strategic when packing your carry-on bag. Here are several items you’ll be glad to have at your fingertips.
- Headphones (noise-canceling preferably). Hopefully, you’ll have access to in-flight entertainment. If not, you can use your headphones to alert your seatmates that you’re not interested in hearing their life stories.
- Phone Charger. Your phone is no good if it’s dead.
- Spare contact lenses and a travel-sized solution. The air up there is dry. If you lose a contact lens, you’ll be in a bind.
- Power snacks. In-flight snacks are expensive. If you become stranded on the runway, what will tide you over? Think nuts, cheese sticks, protein bars, and other lightweight, odor-free, non-messy foods.
- Prescription medications. You never know when it will be your luggage that gets lost or misdirected. Keep your medications with you at all times, because it’s not always easy to replace them when you’re traveling.
- Reading material. A book or magazine is an excellent way to kill half an hour.
- Crossword puzzles. Because odds are, the one in your in-flight magazine will already be filled out.
- A journal or notebook, because time on an airplane is an ideal time for introspection and list-making.
- A pen. To do the crossword puzzles and write in the journal.
- Cards, puzzle, or a seat-back tray-friendly board game. These will be lifesavers if you get stranded on the runway or miss your connecting flight. You’ll be able to banish boredom and make some new friends at the same time!
- Balloons. That’s right: kids love balloons! If you find yourself on a flight or stranded on the runway with a screaming toddler, blow up a balloon and give it to the child’s parents. It will distract and, hopefully, captivate the kid for the rest of the flight — earning you the mad respect of your fellow travelers.
