First Quarter Blockchain Cyber Attacks for 2024

The first quarter of 2024 saw an explosive increase in the number and volume of blockchain cybersecurity incidents. In January $193 million was stolen during 78 incidents, in February $160 million was stolen from over 59 incidents, and in March $149 million was stolen across 86 incidents. Almost half of these incidents come from private key compromises. For Q1 of 2024, private key compromises were at $239.03 million from over 26 incidents, which is an increase of1171% in stolen cryptocurrency compared to Q1 of 2023. Focusing on specific blockchain attacks, Ethereum saw a shocking number of 131 incidents and a total loss of $139.83 million. The sheer number of attacks and amount of cryptocurrency stolen highlights how important advancing security measures are to keep pace with the ever-advancing cyber threats.
