Meriwether Lewis was asked by President Jefferson in the early 1800s to explore US territorial acquisitions that stretched to the Pacific Ocean. Lewis and Clark, his chosen partner, and a group of pioneer spirits achieved that mission in spite of countless barriers, hardships, and challenges.

Lewis was often depressed, resorted to self-destructive remedies, failed to document his findings, and after their return committed suicide.
