Alumni Spotlight: Kasi Dickerson
Kasi Dickerson, VHS Class of 2010
Kasi Dickerson is a leader in her field and has taken what she learned in the Van High School Journalism Department and made it her profession! She got her start as a marketing specialist at Stephen F. Austin State University and now serves as newspaper advisor and professor of Mass Communications at Tyler Junior College. Kasi also loves giving back to her community and was the director of last year’s Van Oil Queen Pageant.
Kasi says, “I basically grew up with a camera in my hand. From taking photos on the sidelines of Vandal football games to sharing my voice and creativity through the yearbook and newspaper, journalism has always been a part of my life. After working as a student journalist throughout college and having a travel blog while I studied abroad in London, I have worked as editor of a magazine in Nacogdoches, spent four years working in marketing communications for SFA and now, I’m teaching journalism at Tyler Junior College. While at SFA, I had the privilege of writing about all the impressive things the college was doing. I even traveled to the Pentagon to interview an alumnus and also got to meet Tony Hawk when helping promote a lecture series he was doing on campus. At TJC, I’ve been able to give back and help bring up the next generation of journalists. I advise the student newspaper, The DrumBeat, teach media writing, public relations, advertising, and more. I was blessed to have such amazing mentors throughout my academic career. From my mom, Mrs. Jeanette Germany, to Mr. Wisdom and Mr. Brown and so many others, I truly wouldn’t have the passion for teaching that I do today without them.”
