Sunday Funday Ride

With Austin hitting triple digits, we planned our Sunday Funday ride to follow shaded off-road trails and a retreat to Austin’s natural spring swimming hole.

From our home in Hyde Park, we biked southeast to Govalle Park for the Southern Walnut Creek trailhead. Most of this paved trail is nicely shaded and we enjoyed a refreshing breeze as the trail opened to fields of sunflowers. We did an out-and-back and then headed to Juiceland for smoothies before heading west along Lady Bird Lake.

The Juiceland at East Cesar Chavez and San Saba is two blocks from where the Ann and Roy Butler hike and bike trail meets the Longhorn Dam. We picked up the trail here and rode west along the wide crushed gravel path to the new Ai Weiwei installation; Forever Bikes.

We then continued along the hike and bike to Barton Springs Pool, making a quick TopoChico stop before claiming a shady spot at the pool.

Around 3:00pm we could see some dark clouds rolling in from the west. So we packed up and made it home just before the rain. In all, we covered 35 miles, most of it off-road. Not bad considering we live in the very center of of the city.
