It’s Not the iPhoneographer, It’s the iPhone

“Also Shot on iPhone 6” pokes fun at Apple’s latest marketing campaign

I’ve seen Apple’s Shot on iPhone 6 billboards all around my home of Chicago, and my initial reaction was that they looked really nice. However, if we’re being completely honest with ourselves most of the iPhone 6 population isn’t taking breathtaking panoramas of mountainsides.

They’re taking selfies. Or maybe pictures of their cat. Or maybe even a selfie with their cat.

This is where the brilliant Also Shot on iPhone 6 tumblr comes in. There are only six images (and a disclaimer at the bottom of the page that leads one to believe that Apple may have pulled the ol’ cease-and-desist on the original blog), but they skewer Apple so perfectly that I hope they create more.

The concept is simple. A picture culled from Google Image search is posited into the familiar, white “Shot on iPhone 6” frame. Then it’s pasted up, guerilla marketing style, near one of the original ads on the streets of San Francisco. The juxtaposition is perfect.

I have an iPhone 5S, and I’ll admit, sometimes I use it more than my “real camera.” As much as I love having a tiny camera/computer in my pocket, I’m still a little put off by the claim that having an iPhone 6 will make you a better photographer. As Apple claims, “you can take the photo and let iPhone 6 do the rest.” Eh, maybe not so much.

Making that point is why this Tumblr is great. Not every photo you take is going to be good enough for a billboard, and they shouldn’t be! Hell, I have a DSLR and still take selfies with it.

In a March 26th interview the anonymous creators told Refinery29:

“Our thought was that people don’t always take pretty pictures on their phones, so we thought it would be funny to show the other, non-beautiful, photos people take. We both work as creatives in advertising and love to poke fun of our industry whenever it takes itself seriously.”

Unfortunately, the city took the posters down, so you’re out of luck if you live in the Bay Area and want to see one of them in the wild.
