Dear Vantage readers,

Thanks for being here. We’re thrilled that Vantage has been able to serve as a platform for such engaged conversations about photography and visual storytelling.

~We appreciate you~

Vantage was launched by Medium in Fall of 2014, with the goal of beautifully presenting all manner of photography and conversations about visual storytelling. In a short time, we became one of the most popular verticals on the platform, fed by a steady stream of reported and contributed content.

Organizational shifts at Medium in 2016 left Vantage operating independently and without a budget. Yet, thanks to a great set of contributors and an engaged audience, this little site has managed to remain a place worth visiting. Vantage lives, and like all living things, it’s changing.

In partnership with a new board, our small team has been working quietly to reorient Vantage according to a new editorial focus. We see the role of images and image-makers changing quickly and dramatically in society, along with the landscape that storytellers must navigate to do their work. We aim to peer into the shifting intersections between visual storytelling and culture, equity and representation, politics and platforms, technology and surveillance. These are discussions we want to support through original reporting and by offering a platform to diverse points of view.

The last few months of work on Vantage already reflects this renewed focus and approach. In the coming months, you can expect to see more changes take root here as we remake Vantage into something new. As always, we remain eager to engage with you and anyone who wants to take part in the conversation.

Watch this space, and thanks again for being here.

Doug, Liza, Pete
