Americaville
An open-ended photo column about where we live
Americaville is a syndicated column currently appearing in M Milwaukee Lifestyle magazine, and now publishing a few times a week here on Vantage. I developed the idea while walking 480 miles across Wisconsin for a project Along the Yellowstone Trail (AYT). There’s lots of time to think when you are alone on the road. After a lot of other “good” ideas, Americaville became the lone survivor.
Each photo is my take on the Midwest and the places I visit here in the U.S. After three long-format documentary projects I wanted to loosen up a bit, leave the constraints of a focused documentary and just make some statements with the camera. Americaville allows for that. While I’m still working on documentaries, I truly enjoy the freedom of Americaville. I even use a small camera without a tripod!

I want to let the viewer know what I was thinking when I make the picture for Americaville, so I include a caption with each entry. I select quotes, edit them, or write my own to accompany the pictures. While I appreciate that many pictures allow for interpretation I wanted Americaville to be more of a statement than my other work.
The goal is to ultimately get Americaville published in a range of publications and edited into a book, but in the meantime, I’m having way too good a time making these pictures. Enjoy!
