Highly interconnected data from complex domains is challenging to model, maintain and query. With Grakn, which is an open source, distributed knowledge graph, building intelligent systems becomes dramatically easier.

This is the first in a series of blog posts to introduce the Grakn Labs team. To find out more about what we do, please visit our website and get in touch via our Community page.

Boris Iordanov: VP of Engineering at Grakn Labs

Name: Borislav Iordanov

What do you do at Grakn Labs?

As VP of Engineering, I oversee the engineering effort, research and architecture. This translates to discussing fun and challenging problems with incredibly intelligent and fun people, on a daily basis.

How long have you been in the team?

9 months, though I got to know them even before that!

(Editor’s Note: Our founder Haikal and Boris actually met online! Haikal reached out to Boris for some advice due to his work with HypergraphDB and the rest is history.)

What did you do before you joined Grakn Labs?

Many things — from applied research in knowledge-oriented computing and e-government to big data processing in finance. But I’ve been in the software industry for over 20 years so there is way too much to list. One notable project I created is HyperGraphDB.

What do you like about working in the team?

No fluff just stuff. Also, there are no politics going on, even by startup standards. Yes, working with smart, kind, thoughtful and humble (for the most part) colleagues is always a pleasure. Doing advanced R&D is a bonus.

What are you looking forward to in the coming months?

Making our first production ready 1.0 release. Then solving real business problems.

Spaces or tabs?

Spaces, definitely, 2 or 4 depending on the language, but always spaces.

Favourite food order in the Grakn Labs weekly shop?

Pizza.

(Editor’s Note: This pizza is truly incredible. The Italians on the team agree as well. I mean look at it.)

Tell us more about what you do when you’re not at work: When? Where? Why? Ok — fencing, reading and child rearing.
