The latest Update is all about Text and UI.

A Fantasy World by Marta Krstic for Vectornator 2.5

Text Tool

As you all know, in Vectornator… you have the ability to install your favorite fonts. But how would you feel if we were to give even more power and control over the Text Tool?

With this update, you can finally manage the top three essential concepts of typography: Kerning, Tracking and Line Height!

Those working in typography or layout design should be in your vocabulary. But if you are unfamiliar with these terms, no fear… we have you covered! We’re going to walk you through what you need to know and explain how the new Vectornator features can be utilized in your designs.

We added a new section named Advanced Typography inside the Inspector to help you manage the way text appears in your design or layout.

Simply slide with your finger or the pencil on the Slider to change value.

Kerning:

Have you ever come across any text and felt there’s something weird? Well, it may be just a Kerning issue.

Kerning is basically the amount of space between two letters (or other characters) and the process of adjusting that space to avoid awkward-looking gaps between your letters and improve legibility.

To change this space manually in Vectornator you can simply slide with your finger or the pencil on the Slider inside the new Advanced Typography section, where you can even reduce the space using a negative value.

Kerning can make a big difference in projects that are text-heavy. By adjusting the Kerning level your projects will look more polished giving proportional spacing between each letter. This will be a great benefit to create layouts and even those who are working on logo design.

Letters with slanted sides (A, V, Y,…) or typed in Italic have a lot of negative space, pay attention to reduce or increase that. Kerning is about Visual Space, not actual space.

Tracking:

Tracking is often confused for kerning, but the concept is a little different. Tracking involves adjusting the spacing throughout the entire word. Once you’ve determined the right spacing between each letter, Tracking can be used to change the spacing equally between every letter at once.

Simply, Tracking adjusts the amount of space between letters within a word.

Adjusting the Tracking can have a significant impact on readability and thus giving you more power to create text with Vectornator that has more impact.

In Vectornator, you can select the text you wish to alter and slide to adjust.

Line Height:

The third term you will see inside the Inspector is Line Height which lets you manage the leading (space) between lines of text. The word leading originated from the lead strips that were used in the old handset printing presses.

The Line Height is essentially the spacing between the baselines of the typeface.

This will give you more precision while creating text with several lines or paragraphs. With your finger or Pencil, simply slide the Vectornator Slider to adjust the value. Watch how the distance between lines decreases or increases depending on which way you use the slider.

Fit Bounds to Text Size

Also now with a simple tap of the Fit button, the bounding box will resize to that of your text. Being able to set the width of the bounding box will allow you to edit and move text precisely.

You will find it at the bottom of the Typography panel.

Guides

We finally re-introduced the Guides. Now you can find a fixed Guides layer at the bottom of the Layer Tab.

When active (simply tap on the Guides layer), the Action Bar also changes. Your guide shapes can be not just lines… but square, circle and more!

Vectornator Tip: Activating the Grid setting can really help you manage the spacing of your design and give you more control over it.

User Interface

We redesigned our User Interface making it 20% tinier giving you more canvas space. This will allow you to put your full focus on creating your next masterpiece!

Document Picker

We’ve redesigned the Document Picker too.

Scroll down or tap on the categories on your left to easily find the template you need.

Notice that we also added a new Search feature. This will help you find a specific template quickly.

Many Import options, Paper, Devices, Icons and Social templates are now easy to select!

Over the next few months, you will see more interface enhancements. Your feedback is allowing us to implement the features that you have been asking for! Every new feature will enhance your Vectornator experience.

Stay tuned for all great things coming!!

Our goal is to continue to create new updates that will give you more control and increase your workflow. Feel free to ask questions, give feedback and share your ideas.
