This week’s overcast mornings and cooler days were a welcome relief from the last few weeks of hot weather, and we took advantage of it to get tons of work done in the tomatoes. In just two mornings of work, we staked and trellised 5 beds of our second tomato planting, and the timing should be perfect to start harvesting from the new plants as our first succession is winding down. The cloud cover the last few mornings seems also to have helped our bell peppers, which we’ve been struggling to keep from getting sunburned before they turn red. We added shade cloth about 10 days ago, and it seems that combined with the overcast weather we’ve had success! Look for some shiny red bell peppers at the Farm Stand tomorrow, in addition to tasty orange and red lunchbox peps.

Red bells are finally coming in!

The farm has been quieter this week with several of our interns out of town, and we’ll be down a member of our crew beginning next week as Emma heads back to school on the east coast. Throughout the summer, Emma has contributed so much time to Veggielution in her roles as both a farm and community engagement intern, working with Jason and I in the fields as well as assisting Madeline with the coordination of Cocina and First Saturday. She leaves us to complete her final year as a Human Development major at Cornell, where I know her experiences at Veggielution will provide valuable insight. We’ll miss you, Emma!
