Fresh lettuce and leeks to brighten your day!
This week brought another storm system to the South Bay, with heavy rains and high winds at Veggielution several days this week. Wednesday afternoon in particular was very windy, and the farm did not escape unscathed. We did some damage control yesterday morning to re-secure the tarps in the MidAcre and the row covers in the South Plot, and we disassembled the two canopies that were near the chicken coop, which had all but blown away in the storm. In the midst of taking apart the larger of the canopies, the farm crew took shelter underneath it as hail started raining down on us. Minutes later though, the storm clouds blew away, the sun was shining, and steam was rising from the roof of the pavilion. It’s been a wild week!
Today also marked the first harvests of a few crops whose arrival we’ve been patiently awaiting: lettuce and radishes! The limited daylight and consistently cold temperatures the last few months have slowed the growth of our veggies almost to a halt, so I was very pleased to note on my field walk earlier this week that we’d have some new crops coming in to the Farm Stand tomorrow. We’ll have baby green and red lettuce heads and a limited number of easter egg radishes, as well as more leeks, which we picked for the first time last week. This is of course our slower season, but there are still plenty of winter goodies to choose from at the Farm Stand, from what we’re harvesting at Veggielution, and what my friend Sam is growing at Spade & Plow. Stop by tomorrow to see for yourself!
