After the record-breaking heat wave that hit the Bay Area over the weekend, we returned to the farm this week to much cooler weather here in San Jose, but news of natural disasters in other parts of the country and around the world. Alongside ever-worsening political upheaval here in the United States, this week’s repeated examples of the very real and deadly effects of climate change worldwide feel nothing short of apocalyptic. With so much turmoil all around us, it’s difficult to be positive, but I’m grateful for the moments I can just focus my mind and body on trellising tomatoes or pruning flowers or picking basil. And I’m grateful for our staff, our partner organizations, and our community members who have made it clear this week in a multitude of ways that we stand together to protect ourselves, our families, and our communities from violence and persecution. We defend DACA and the rights of all our undocumented community members, and denounce the white supremacist policies and rhetoric of the current administration, which has emboldened racists, white nationalists, and neo-Nazis across the country, from Charlottesville to right here in the Bay Area.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, scared, angry, or hopeless in the face of everything going on in the world right now, we invite you to visit the farm. Take some time away from the computer screen or the news and make use of this community space on the Eastside, on one of the last pieces of agricultural land in San Jose. Tomorrow if you come to the farm you’ll find all our First Saturday programs: yoga, Cocina, Youth Garden activities, community lunch, music, and Art in the Garden, and a chance to connect with us and our community. We hope to see you there!
