Red cabbage, green garlic, and a mountain of kale!
The sunny weather and a promising 10-day forecast has definitely lifted the farm crew’s spirits and put us in the mood for summer plantings. Exactly 3 weeks overdue from our scheduled planting date, tomorrow we will be putting our first round of tomatoes in the ground. While the delays this spring in bed preparation and planting have caused me a fair bit of stress, I reminded myself that last year’s tomatoes didn’t go in until first week of May. Farming is a prime example of the concept that planning is essential, but plans are meaningless.
As the days get exponentially longer and we are finally getting some truly warm weather, our crops are growing like gangbusters, especially the red Russian kale. The plants are truly thriving, and that means we’ve got mountains of kale just waiting to be picked up at tomorrow’s Farm Stand. Thanks to a cold and wet winter, this kale is sweet and tender, perfect for salads, smoothies, soups, and whatever else you can dream up!
