As self-driving vehicles add more expensive sensor equipment while at the same time are still “learning” how to self-drive, when should we expect the self-driving vehicles are BOTH cheaper and safer than existing vehicles today?

For all the marketing hype Tesla has tried to instill, as expected insuring a Tesla has become more expensive. AAA is raising the insurance rates on Tesla vehicles.

Reported by Automotive News:

“Teslas get into a lot of crashes and are costly to repair afterward,” said Russ Rader, spokesman for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which is the Highway Loss Data Institute’s parent organization. “Consumers will pay for that when they go to insure one

It should be noted that the quote says “AND”. That is, Teslas get into a lot of crashes in addition to having expensive repair costs.
