blueprint:2: how do we know that DNA makes us who we are- My notes
Today I read about a third of the chapter. The author describes two studies that he founded regarding heritability. The first study is CAP (Colorado Adoption Project and TEDS (Twins Early Development Study).
CAP
- He studied 250 adopted children.
- Genetic, Environmental and Both type of parents
- Children were analyzed at ages 7, 12, 16 in a lab and phone interviews in-between. The children are now in their 40s and still being studied.
- The results showed genetic influence on intelligence, verbal and spatial ability, memory , reading and temperament
TEDS
- UK
- Studied DZ (dizygotic) and MZ (monozygotic) twins. (Fraternal and Identical)
- Home visits, tests completed by parents and then online tests
- The results showed substantial heritability on lack of empathy, disregard for others, hyperactivity and inattention
Terms
- Variance- The extent to which people differ
- Covariance — Index of similarity
- Correlation .1= small, .3 moderate, .5 substantial
