The beautiful Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen (KIT) is an amazing location in the east of Amsterdam with perhaps one of the most iconic halls of the Netherlands.
Joost Mallo, account manager Conferences and Events, has been working at the institute since November 2017 and can’t wait to tell you about the beauty of the institute and how it’s as beautiful on the inside as on the outside.
What are the facts about KIT that most people don’t know about?
With the conferences and events we host at our beautiful venue, we support the projects of the institute on global health, sustainable economic development and on gender equality. With the KIT Investment Fund we fund our own projects that have an actual positive impact on the world. This way an event has a global impact, which is something we are very proud of!
What do you think is one of the most exciting features of your venue that sets it apart from others?
Perhaps our most exciting feature is the Marble Hall with twelve different kinds of marble, which always creates a ‘wow’ moment, when being entered. Although our stunning Queen Máxima Hall is also epic. Every guest has his or her own personal favorite of our highly detailed venue. The best is to come and have a look for yourself.

Can you tell us a stand-out experience you have related to KIT?
With a venue as ours it’s important to tell the story in a way it relates to the event of the guest. When it’s about sustainability or about financial inclusion, the link with the KIT is easily made, but every now and then it’s harder to link the event to our venue. At some point I received a request for a conference, but when googling there were about ten options which conference it could be, so I picked up the phone and called the client. She informed me that it was about the internet. ‘That’s great’, I replied, ‘we have internet too!’. We are very happy to welcome the Internet Measurement Conference in October this year at our venue.
How do people currently find and book your space?
A lot of our business is repeat business: some events have been with us for over fifteen years and we are very honored to have those with us. Because we are not a ‘standard’ location, having a network is very important for us. It goes without saying that online has a large impact on our bookings, but the best conversion for us is through our relations. I am always very happy when a client does the same request again, because you can be proud that you have done a good job with the entire team.
What kind of events have you hosted so far? What kind of events you’d like to host that you haven’t done?
Where to start?! We are best suitable for conferences and congresses, preferably focused on health, science and/or sustainability, but we are also great for award shows, dinners, seminars, fashion shows, premieres, annual meetings, parties, Christmas events and the occasional wedding. Since we are a knowledge institute and also known as the SDG-House (a place where the Sustainable Development Goals stand central in everything the tenants of the building and ourselves do) conferences and events focused on a sustainable and better future work best at our venue!
…but we also believe in supporting startups such as Venopi and were therefor very happy to join Venopi!
How much does each booking cost approximately?
Because of the wide variety of events, this is a bit of a hard question to answer. We have fixed rates for venue hire, but with our in-house caterer we can make it as wild as you want!
If you are looking into booking the venue exclusively for a conference for 250 guests with a catering package including a reception at the end, the estimated costs would be around €24.000,-. A sit down dinner for hundred guests would be around €9.000,-. For ‘smaller’ meetings we offer an all-in package for €77,50 per person. All these prices include service and VAT.
Why did you decide to list your space with Venopi?
We have always been very proud of being the host of the event of TEDxAmsterdamWomen and Ivana Setiawan was one of the startup finalist and approached us. Obviously no location minds more bookings, but we also believe in supporting startups such as Venopi and were therefor very happy to join Venopi!
…This is a very important step into becoming internationally known as the conference location for healthcare events and with these events support the noble work of our institute in making the world a better and healthier place. Events that do good.
Anything new or exciting that you are working on and you’d like to share with us?
A few weeks ago we received a positive advice of the CGR, which means that, despite our luxury looks, we can welcome events and sponsors from the pharmaceutical industry at our venue, which is important for hosting medical conferences and events. This is a very important step into becoming internationally known as the conference location for healthcare events and with these events support the noble work of our institute in making the world a better and healthier place. Events that do good.

Venopi believes in the power of local sharing and thoughtful use of resources.
