White Star Capital’s 2020 Year in Review

As this unprecedented year comes to a close, the White Star Capital team wanted to take some time to reflect on the accomplishments of our portfolio companies and the achievements of our team in 2020.

Over the last year, we’ve added four new investments to our portfolio: Ledn in Canada, Multis in France, Finn.auto in Germany, and Himedi in South Korea. This year has also brought the exit of Freshly, which was acquired by Nestle for $1.5bn including earnout. This acquisition resulted in 1.25x return on Fund I and represents more than 12x on our investments in the company throughout the years. In addition, we’ve had over 11 follow-on rounds, including Tier Mobility’s $250m Series C, Dialogue’s C$43m Series B+, and Vention’s C$38m Series B.

In October 2020, we’ve also announced the first close of our first specialized fund, a $30m Digital Asset Fund which will invest in crypto-networks and blockchain-enabled businesses at each layer of the tech stack including protocols, infrastructure and applications. This new fund brings our total AUM to $500m.

In 2020, we made many well-deserved promotions, including adding our newly appointed Chief People Officer/Chief Financial Officer, Julie Plouffe, and newly appointed Chief Sustainability Officer/General Counsel, Patrick Recasens-Morente, to our general partnership. Eddie Lee, who is strengthening our relationships in South Korea, and Thomas Klocanas, who is helping set up the Digital Asset Fund, were promoted to Principal. We’ve also opened our Toronto office, which is being set up by Sanjay Zimmermann, who was promoted to Principal. We also wanted to congratulate Karolina Mrozkova, Alex Wilson and Pauline Studer for being promoted to Vice President, as well as Duc Nguyen, who was promoted to Associate.

We expanded our team by welcoming Nicolas Zylberstein, Venture Partner establishing our presence in San Francisco; Tandis Azarbad, VP of Finance; and Jonathan Brun, Associate, to the team this year. Our global team now consists of a talented group of professionals ranging across 20 nationalities, who speak 15 languages.

Check out the infographic below to learn more about our accomplishments this year. We look forward to continuing working alongside our founders and co-investors, and welcoming new companies into the White Star family in 2021.
