2018 Deep dive on the Canadian Venture Capital Ecosystem
A year ago, we published the first edition of our Canadian tech and Venture Capital report. A report initially meant for our own internal purposes, which we decided to share externally and ended up being viewed a few thousand times by both domestic and international players interested in our ecosystem. Today, we are proud to share the second edition of our report and hope that you will enjoy reading it.
While the report relies on several external data sources, internally at White Star we’ve seen many of the findings play out with our portfolio companies. Since the last report, we’ve added two new Canadian companies to our portfolio: Vention and Dialogue. We’ve also had two of our existing companies, Drop and Mnubo, raise over $40m in new funding from local and international investors.
Like a startup, we’ve also grown our operations at White Star by raising a new $230m fund and adding a Principal and CFO to our Montreal office.
In this second edition of our report, we aim to reiterate our enthusiasm for the Canadian Tech and Venture Capital ecosystem as well as touch upon a few additional topics.
In addition to sharing our excitement about Canada and expressing our belief that the ecosystem is stronger than ever, we look at a few new topics. We examine a few subsectors, larger round dynamics, VCCI and regional programs. We are also pleased to further explore one of Canada’s key strengths: it’s diversity and talent. Finally we end with an updated deep dive on VC’s and other investors making up the space.
