At the start of 2022, as we worked to place experienced talent with the startup partners we were working with, a key insight emerged: Professionals, regardless of their startup background, often faced hurdles transitioning into specific roles within the ecosystem.

Imagine mid-level product managers aspiring to delve into fintech, business unit leaders from traditional banking eager to pivot into fintech product management, seasoned consultants in financial services, and experienced project managers from more traditional settings, all seeking a shift. The common thread? A skills gap that complicated the alignment of these talents with suitable opportunities.

Leveraging our track record in placing top-tier talent, we identified an exciting prospect — expanding into the realm of learning and development and establishing Venture for Africa as a talent accelerator for experienced managers and operators in the African tech ecosystem aspiring to transition into non-technical roles.

The VFA Fintech PM Bootcamp

We started off with the VFA Fintech PM Bootcamp, a 12-week program catered to experienced professionals seeking to transition into or upskill within the Product Management space in the African fintech sector.

The program offered practical experience, curated content, interactive workshops and real-world case studies, facilitated by industry experts.

To date, we’ve navigated through two cohorts and have worked with over 30 fellows to enhance their capacity as fintech product managers.

But this isn’t merely about filling roles; it’s a deliberate endeavour to cultivate a reservoir of adept PMs, primed to confront the nuanced challenges in the dynamic realm of fintech in our ecosystem.

The VFA Sandbox

The VFA Sandbox

One additional innovative feature of the VFA bootcamps is our sandbox experiences.

During these experiences, bootcamp participants have the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in real-world situations with actual challenges. Simultaneously, the startups enrolled in the sandbox program benefit from valuable support and resources to handle product-related tasks and overcome challenges.

Currently, 50% of participants who chose to participate in the sandbox experience have been successfully placed 🚀

Many have successfully redefined their career trajectories within fintech product management, while others have appreciated the structured learning experience as a valuable asset.

Beyond individual growth, participants have been immersed in evolving trends and industry insights, providing them with a compass to navigate the intricate landscape of fintech.

These experiences also serve as a catalyst for building meaningful connections, fostering career development, and laying the groundwork for strategic planning in the fintech sector.

Her newfound knowledge also empowered her to actively contribute to the fintech revolution in her home country of Botswana.

Then there’s Andrew, an industry newcomer seeking to demystify fintech complexities.

Initially navigating from a blockchain background, Andrew found our bootcamp to be an invaluable bridge into the fintech realm. The program, with its structured learning approach, not only untangled the intricacies of finance but also instilled a deep understanding of fintech complexities.

Crucially, it emphasized the role of empathy in product management, a crucial insight that enabled Andrew to build robust relationships with stakeholders and bolster confidence in his capabilities as a fintech product manager.”

🌟 Nyambura Githaiga | Customer Success Manager

Nyambura’s main takeaway from the bootcamp was centered around the knowledge she gained in product management.

The bootcamp not only offered Nyambura a supportive community but also valuable connections with industry experts and facilitators.

Through engaging in discussions and networking opportunities, she gained valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities involved in transitioning into fintech product management.

Through the bootcamp, she also formed connections with industry experts, expanding her professional network and providing a valuable resource as she advances in her fintech career.

What’s next?

We also asked fellows from the bootcamp to share what advice they’d give to anyone looking to sign up for any one of the VFA bootcamps, and here’s what they had to say:
