Sunset in Tofino

Stella’s magic came through as we arrived at the ferry to be one of the last couple of cars allowed to board. Our timing was shockingly impeccable and as we sailed across, we kept our eyes peeled for those elusive whales. Arriving in Nanaimo was breathtaking. Matt and I were brought back in time to our shore arrivals during our Mediterranean cruise ~ the colorful houses lined up all adorable on the hill with the sea sparkling below us.

We cruised up the island to our first site and were immediately inundated with the full experience of the PNW — the fog and mist rolled in and we quickly scrambled for our warmer clothes. Our first destination was on the opposite side of the island, so we drove straight through the glorious redwood forest to get to Ucluelet. Stella found us a killer spot right on an inlet and the dogs enjoyed some exploration time.

The following day we headed North to our true destination — Tofino — the land of shaggy beach bums and big waves. Arlo was stoked. He has been growing out his (hair) wings just for this trip. True to Stella’s magic, the clouds broke just in time for us to hit the beach. Matt with his board, Arlo with his walker, me with everything else in the stroller.

After hitting up the local hot spots for shopping and eats, we geared up and began heading south to Victoria in search of a full British welcome. And we were not disappointed. We found stately brick buildings lining a cobblestone path next to the ocean. In a strange twist of fate, we thought that missing the morning ferry (by three cars) meant that Stella was losing her touch, but it looks like she had a card up her sleeve. The delay gave us time to explore the town a bit longer and we happened upon a crowd of people…

Turns out the news of our visit to Victoria prompted the royal couple to stop by and say hello. Our shots were super good — as witnessed by the personal wave from Prince William.

We cruised out on the afternoon ferry — headed back to the homeland. Canada, you’ve been great.

Goodbye Canada!
