Dave on the advantages of remote working

‘In theory, you can travel the world and still have a 9 to 5 job. The technology is here that enables that. Hiring remote workers is something I’ve definitely considered because it’s really hard to hire lead developers etc. It’s not because there’s a lack of talent its because the demand for them is high.

Giving people the option to work remotely allows your company to cast its nets a lot wider when you’re looking to onboard new staff. This flexibility also entices the best talent as they like the freedom remote working gives them.

My latest hire, for example, works 3 days at home and 2 days in the office. My lead developer lives in Athens. So we have a lot of remote working happening already. We’re set up for it we do it every single day.’

Dave tells us his tips for managing remote workers

‘When it comes to managing remote workers video technology is key. Jumping on to a quick video call to discuss things face to face is a great way to sort out problems and is more personable than a phone call.

One of the things you can consider as well is the use of a digital board. If you’re operating in an agile team and holding daily standups the process of standing around a board and discussing tasks together is essential. Remote workers who can’t do that are missing out. By introducing a digital board you can keep that collaborative ideas session it provides.’
