Existing video-sharing platforms rely on advertising. This means they have to answer to third-parties and advertisers. They aren’t always working in the interest of the people who help bring people to their platforms — the Creators — or even the viewers.

Viewers watch over 1 billion hours of video per day and want to be able to find the content that appeals to them. They also want to support their favourite Creators.

Viewers have to watch advertising on existing video sharing websites if they want to support Creators. Existing platforms want to show viewers as many adverts as possible. This doesn’t always create a great experience. Online advertising has become so invasive that worldwide ad-blocker adoption is at 26% on desktop and growing. Major companies are even building ad-blockers into their mobile browsers.

At the same time, advertisers are wanting to reach as many Viewers as possible but only against “popular” and “brand safe” videos. This means that very few videos online get monetized. That’s especially true if you aren’t making mainstream videos. To top it all off, intermediaries then go and take a large share of the profits.

Both Creators and Publishers are trying new ways to make money.
