Being an online creator is hard — 96.5% of creators never manage to cross the U.S. poverty line. And only 3% of channels bring in $16,800 or more from online advertising each year.

At the start of 2018, life got even harder for creators. A spate of new monetization rules were introduced. On the largest video platform, a channel now needs a total watch time of 4,000 hours (in the past 12-months) and at least 1,000 subscribers to even be eligible to run advertising.
