Arizona Diamondbacks vs St. Louis Cardinals

First Pitch: 8:15 PM EST | Busch Stadium | Current Odds: Cardinals -115, 8

Starting Pitchers: (AZ) R. Ray (9–5) 3.15 ERA vs. (STL) M. Wacha (7–4) 3.93 ERA

The St. Louis Cardinals will host the Arizona Diamondbacks for a 3 game weekend series at Busch Stadium. Both teams are in the NL Playoff hunt as the Diamondbacks lead the current Wildcard standings by +1.5 games while the Cardinals are -7.5 games back.

LHP Robbie Ray gets the ball in Game 1 of this series. Ray has 3.15 ERA with 149 Ks and 57 BBs. Ray is 1–1 with a 3.71 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP, nine walks and 21 strikeouts over 17 innings in his last three starts. He makes his third career start against the Cardinals and he is 0–2 with a 7.88 ERA and a 2.125 WHIP over eight innings of work in those three games.

While Ray’s career numbers aren’t great vs the Cardinals, he has has a very good offense backing his start. The Cardinals has slid a bit in offensive rankings but they are still batting .259 as a team with 131 home runs.

The Diamondbacks are 10–1 in Rays last 11 starts vs. a team with a losing record.

St. Louis is fresh off a three games sweep over the Colorado Rockies. The Cardinals have played themselves into the NL Wildcard and with 61 games left, they are 3.5 games out of the NL Central and 7.5 games out of the Wildcard.

The Cardinals will give the start to Michael Wacha tonight who holds a 3.93 ERA and has compiled 100 strikeouts. Wacha had his seven start unbeaten string broken with a loss in his last start, which came against the Cubs on the road Sunday night. Wacha makes his fifth career start against the Diamondbacks: he is 0–1 with a 4.37 ERA and a 1.368 WHIP over 22.2 innings in those starts.

The Cards are middle of the pack offensively and as a team they hold a .257 batting average with 122 home runs.

The Cardinals are 1–5 in Wachas last 6 starts vs. a team with a winning record.

This should be a good series between two teams fighting for a playoff spot. The Cardinals are just a .500 team at home and they will be without Dexter Fowler in the lineup. The Diamondbacks are 5–1 in Ray’s last 6 road starts and 8–3 in Ray’s last 11 starts overall. I like Ray to bounce back from his loss and get the win in tonight’s matchup.
