A battle between two of the top teams in the American League will kick off tonight for a four-game series as the Boston Red Sox travel to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Seattle Mariners. Last year, the teams split the season series 3–3. Tonight’sstarting pitchers will be David Price (7–4, 4.00 ERA) for the Red Sox and Felix Hernandez (6–5, 5.70 ERA) for the Mariners.
Boston enters this weekend series fresh of a three-game sweep over the struggling Orioles. Boston has won seven of their last ten games and they lead the AL East by 1.0 game over the New York Yankees. The Red Sox have been one of the top teams in the game since the start of the season, boasting a top-ranked offense along with a top five rotation. If the Red Sox expect to make a postseason run they will need David Price in the rotation. Price picked up a win on Saturday vs the White Sox. Price allowed 2 earned runs in the 1st inning and then calmed down to pitch 5 scoreless innings en route to the win.
Seattle has been the biggest surprise in the American League so far this season. The Mariners have played equally as well at home (23–12) as on the road (21–12). Seattle enters this weekend series with a 0.5 game lead over the defending World Series Champion Houston Astros in the AL West. The Mariners have scored 19 runs in their last three games and four or more runs in 10 of their last 13 games. Seattle has won 10 of their last 12 games. King Felix is expected to take the mound tonight and he is 3–2 with a 4.04 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP in seven starts at Safeco Field.
Tonight, we’ll have two Cy Young Award winning pitchers on the mound, however, the Total is set too low at 8. Both pitchers are prone to sloppy innings. Hernandez is allowing a .258 batting average this season and has allowed four or more runs in six of his last seven starts. Price has allowed 7 runs in his last three starts. The Over is 5–1 in Prices last 6 starts vs. American League West, the Over is 16–5 in Prices last 21 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance.
