Boston Red Sox (19–18) vs St. Louis Cardinals (21–15)
The Gateway City plays host to an Inter-league matchup between the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals. Boston dropped the rubber game of their set with the Rays, getting routed 11–2 Sunday afternoon. St. Louis took two of three from the Cubs, winning the finale 5–0 Sunday afternoon. These two teams have not met since August 2014 when the Cardinals took 2 of 3 games.
Boston is clearly missing a power bat in the middle of their lineup. Mookie Betts is the team leader with 6 HR’s, however, they rank 3rd in baseball with a team .270 batting average. As a team, they are tied with the Giants at the very bottom of baseball with just 31 team home runs. This power number is unlike the recent Red Sox teams anchored by David Ortiz. The Red Sox will need to pick up a power bat in order to compete with the Yankees and Orioles in the AL East.
Taking the mound for Boston Tuesday night is LH Eduardo Rodriguez who has taken three straight no-decisions and has six total ND’s on the season but collectively is (1–1, 2.80 ERA).
The Cardinals have played surprisingly well recently after winning eight of nine and 18 of their last 24 to jump to the top of the NL Central standings. The Cardinals head into the Boston series after taking two of three from the defending World Series champion, Chicago Cubs.
Taking the mound for St. Louis is Lance Lynn who is (4–1) with a 2.75 ERA, a 1.195 WHIP, 16 walks and 36 strikeouts over 39.1 innings of work this season. Cardinals are 6–1 in their last seven games following a win, and 18–6 in their last 24 overall. St. Louis is also 8–3 in their last 11 Tuesday games, and 4–0 in Lynn’s last four starts in game one of a series.
Rodriguez has been solid for the Red Sox but he simply has not gotten the run support he deserves. Boston’s offense is spotty and facing Lance Lynn tonight will be another challenge. I like the Cardinals at home in this matchup in a low scoring game.
