BYU Cougars vs. Houston Cougars Free NCAAF Pick, 10–16–2020
BYU Cougars (4–0) vs. Houston Cougars (1–0)
NCAAF Odds: BYU -4.5 | Houston +4.5, O/U 62.5
Date: Friday, October 16, 2020
Time: 9:30 PM EST
The 13th ranked BYU Cougars travel to TDECU Stadium in Houston, Texas, to take on the Houston Cougars Friday night at 9:30 pm EST. Houston kept their undefeated season intact after taking down the UTSA Roadrunners last Saturday, yet failed to cover the spread for the first time in four games as -34-point favorites. Houston had several contests canceled and played its first game of the season last Thursday, beating Tulane 49–31 while covering a -6 point spread. Oddsmakers list BYU as -4.5 point road favorites in Friday night’s matchup.
BYU is off to a strong start this season and one of the best offensive teams in the country, averaging 43.8 points per game. Defensively, the Cougars have played well both upfront as well as in the secondary and are one of the top defenses in the country allowing just 11.0 PPG and 250 Total Yards per game. Expect the defense to get a workout in this contest versus a Houston team that is loaded both at the running back and receiver positions.
Houston played well against Tulane in their lone matchup of the season but it’s hard to put much stock into their play after one game. QB Clayton Tune struggled to find much consistency through the air for the Cougars as he connected on 20 of his 33 pass attempts for 319 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 interceptions. A little rusty in his first outing but he looked good overall. Defensively, the Cougars will need to tighten up their coverage and tackling after allowing 31 points to Tulane. The defense will need to simply keep them in games and allow their offense to score points.
BYU appears to be a complete team with an offense that scores through the air and the ground with a stingy defense. They face a tough challenge with this Houston offense but I don’t fully trust the Houston Cougars yet after just one game, compared to BYU. Houston may be able to score some points but it won’t be enough as BYU appears to be the complete package. Houston may have trouble stopping this BYU offense and I expect the defense to make key stops vs. a Houston offense that have very few reps this season. I expect the BYU Cougars to pull away with the win in the second half and cover the -4.5 point spread.
