Two of the top National League teams take the field on Sunday to renew their rivalry when the Chicago Cubs visit the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers took game one of this series by a score of 4–0, behind a strong outing from Alex Wood. Today, two of the top pitchers in the game face off with Jon Lester taking the mound for the Cubs and Clayton Kershaw will get the start for the Dodgers.
Chicago is slowly creeping back towards the top of the NL Central after winning six of their last 10 ball games which puts them in a tie with the Cardinals for 2nd and a .5 game behind the Brewers. Chicago may have suffered from a World Series hangover at the start of this season but with the talent on their roster they should find themselves in the hunt towards the end of this season. Today, they will face one of the hottest pitchers in the game and their offense will need to be swinging the bats to get over on Kershaw. The Cubs have been a good offensive team so far as they come in ranked 9th in the league in scoring, putting up 4.91 RPG but as a team they are only batting .242 which ranks them 20th in the Majors. Kris Bryant leads the team with a .280 batting average and 11 home runs.
Lester has gone 31–15 with a 3.62 ERA in 57 career games in May and is 2–2 with a 2.82 ERA in six starts vs the Dodgers, including 1–1 with a 2.79 ERA in three starts here at Dodger Stadium.
Saturday’s pitcher, Alex Wood, improved to (6–0) on the season after Saturday’s win and now the Dodgers throw Clayton Kershaw vs the Cubbies. Chicago won’t get any breaks with Kershaw on the mound. Kershaw is 3–1 with a 1.93 ERA in five starts at home, 27–11 with a 2.49 ERA in 53 career starts in May and 5–3 with a 2.18 ERA in eight starts vs the Cubs.
Los Angeles is 2.5 games out of first in the NL West but they can’t seem to make up any ground on the Rockies who just keep winning. The Dodgers have one of the best rotations in baseball and are 1st in the league in ERA at 3.30, while also ranking 1st in WHIP at 1.18.
