The 18th ranked Cincinnati Bearcats take on the 15th ranked SMU Mustangs for the AAC Championship. Cincinnati beat UCONN to advance to the Finals while SMU took care of Central Florida. Both teams that will be given high seeds when the brackets come out on Sunday and the winner could possibly get as high as a #3 seed.
Cincinnati and SMU split the season series (1–1) this season with both teams capturing wins on their home court. The Bearcats have been playing great basketball, winners of 8 of their last 10 games which includes a (4–0) record in the AAC Tournament. Cincy withstood a UCONN run in the second half with the Huskies cutting a 12 point halftime lead to 2 points. However, the Bearcats defense withstood the storm and were able to force misses on 34 of the Huskies 56 field goal attempts.
SMU has won 15 straight games since losing to Cincinnati on January 12th. The Mustangs have also made money for backers going (21–6–1 ATS) on the season. SMU can be a frustrating team to watch at times as it appears they haven’t quite reached their potential. They are certainly one of the best teams in the country but they lack the ability to put away teams and at times play to their competition. They weren’t their best vs UCF but they managed to win and cover the spread and a narrow escape of East Carolina the prior night may have got their attention.
SMU lost to Cincy on the road earlier this season by 2 points but avenged the loss on their home court by 9 points. I think SMU is the better team playing at their full potential and both teams play solid defense. This game will come down to rebounding and free throws and I believe SMU has the edge in these areas.
