The Cleveland Browns and New York Jets meet on Monday Night Football at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Both teams are looking for a bounce-back victory after losing in Week 1 to avoid dropping to (0–2). Since 2007, 97 teams started the season (0–2) but only 12 of those teams reached the NFL Playoffs.
The Cleveland Browns have lost five of their last seven road games including a 43–13 loss to Tennessee in Week 1 at home as -5.5 point home favorites. New York will lean on back up QB Trevor Siemian after the news broke that starting QB Sam Darnold is out indefinitely with mononucleosis. The Jets lost in Week 1 to Buffalo at home, 17–16 and failing to cover the spread as -2.5 point home favorites. The Jets lone bright spot offensively in Week 1 was RB Le’Veon Bell who finished with 92 yards from scrimmage which included a nine-yard touchdown pass. Bell finished with 60 yards rushing on 17 carries. The Jets defense played well last week, creating 4 turnovers and C.J. Mosley led a ball-hawking defense with an interception return for a touchdown. The game turned when Mosley was forced off the field in the third quarter with a groin injury, and the Bills took full advantage with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown drives. Mosley is not expected to suit up on Monday night and his absence will be missed.
On paper, before the season, this game had star appeal. However, the injuries are mounting up for the Jets in key positions. The Cleveland Browns have failed to cover 10 of their last 13 games as a favorite. The New York Jets are 4–10–1 ATS in their last 15 games as an underdog. The general public will be all over the Browns despite this being the first time in seven years they are road favorites. I find it hard to back the Browns until they can prove they can win on the road in the NFL. My pick is on the Over 45. I feel that the Jets offense will be OK with Siemian and should be able to run the ball with Bell in the backfield. The Browns will also have a chance to rebound from last week and put some points on the board, especially with C.J. Mosley absent from the defense.
