Coastal Carolina Chanticleers vs. Kansas Jayhawks
Saturday, September 12, 2020, 10:00 PM EST
Line: Kansas -6.5, O/U 56
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers travel to Lawrence, Kansas to face the Kansas Jayhawks for the first weekend of college football. The Chanticleers (5–7, and 7–5 ATS) went on the road in 2019 to beat Kansas, 12–7 in a low scoring affair. Will Les Miles have his Jayhawks ready for a revenge spot as -6.5 point home chalk?
Coastal Carolina proved last season they can compete with a Power 5 conference team. The Chanticleers averaged 30 PPG on offense but they also allowed 30 PPG. With 8 returning starters on defense we can expect to see an improved unit to complement an offense that can score. The secondary will need to improve upon their 70% completion rate if they expect to compete for the Sun Belt Conference.
The Jayhawks should improve upon their (3–9, 5–7 ATS) record going into the second year under head coach Les Miles. RB Pooka Williams is the star of the show, but they have three of the top four targets returning. Kansas will start a new quarterback but this is a run-first offense that could also capitalize on a weak Coastal Carolina secondary. The Jayhawks averaged 23.5 points per game and gave up 36.1 PPG, not a recipe for success. Kansas will return only 5 starters on defense so there may be some growing pains early on this season.
Les Miles should eventually bring a winning culture to Lawrence but there are too many question marks surrounding this team. Coastal Carolina returns 85%+ of their team from 2019 and they have a good chance to win on Saturday, which would put this program on the right path. The Chanticleers will need to stop Kansas’ rushing attack but the Chanticleers offense should score points against a suspect Kansas defense. I’ll take the +6.5 points and back Coastal Carolina and a team that will be familiar with their surroundings and a more complete team.
