Tuesday night MACtion in Buffalo to determine first place in the MAC East Conference. Miami (OH) Redhawks (3–1 MAC) travel to UB Stadium to take on the Buffalo Bulls (4–0 MAC). The Redhawks are coming off a tough 31–30 double-overtime road loss to Army and the Bulls recorded a 31–17 road win against Toledo in their previous action.
Both teams had 10 days to prepare for the first Tuesday night college football game of the season. Miami (OH) enters this matchup off a disappointing loss to Army but a win tonight would put them in a tie for first place in the MAC with Buffalo. The Redhawks senior QB Gus Ragland (1769, 14 TDs, 3 INTs) has played very well this season and had a great game vs Army throwing for 329 passing yards with four TDs. Miami relies on their defense to win games and they will have to be sharp against a potent Buffalo offense. The Redhawks are currently averaging 26.2 points, ranking them 90th overall, while they are holding opponents to 24.9 points, placing them 53rd in the country.
Buffalo is already on pace to post the most wins in a season in program history. Buffalo has had two seasons with eight wins, including the only MAC championship season for the Bulls in 2008. A win tonight would be another step towards a historic season. The Bulls defense held a good Toledo offense to just 17 points in their last outing. Buffalo’s defense ranks 26th in the nation allowing 330 Total Yards and 11th in the nation in Passing Yards (168). Buffalo will lean on their defense tonight if QB Tyree Jackson struggles. Jackson has thrown 5 interceptions in the last three games but on the season he has thrown for 1869 yards, 20 TDs, 8 INTs. What will take the pressure off of Jackson is the dynamic backfield of Kevin Marks and Jaret Patterson who have combined for 14 touchdowns. Expect the Bulls to give the Redhawks a heavy dose of this rushing attack to soften up their defense.
Both teams have similar strengths and two defenses that are locked in entering Tuesday night’s game. Weekday MAC games are always entertaining and difficult to handicap. However, Miami (OH) has won two straight vs the Bulls and with how well QB Gus Ragland has played, I’ll take the +7 points and look for a tight game with two very good defenses. This game could come down to a field goal so back the Redhawks +7 to cover the spread on the road.
