A Week 5 matchup pits the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs take on the surging Houston Texans. Kansas City will be working on short rest after their Monday Night Football win over the Redskins, 29–20 in a wild finish for bettors. Houston is fresh off a 57–14 win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 4.
The Chiefs are 4–0 against the spread the season and are 6–1 in their last seven games against the spread. Monday night’s victory over the Redskins gives the Chiefs a win in all four games of at least 7 points. Alex Smith had done a marvelous job leading this offense and dictating the tempo of the game. Smith has thrown for 1067 yards and 8 touchdowns with a 76% completion percentage. One of the biggest issues for the Chiefs offense has been their offensive line, which has allowed 16 sacks so far this season. It’s only a matter of time before the pounding wears on Alex Smith.
KC certainly looks like a Super Bowl contender and if they get through the AFC it will be because of their defense. Kansas City has recorded a total of 11 sacks, five fumbles, and four interceptions this season. Chris Jones and Justin Houston are the standout stars on the defensive line with Marcus Peters controlling the secondary. They will face a big challenge tonight with rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson.
The Texans appear to have the quarterback of the future in the former Clemson star. Deshaun Watson has amassed 811 yards with 8 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Watson is still green so he will make mistakes and it will be in Bill O’Brien’s best interest to help Watson limit these mistakes vs a very good Chiefs defense.
Houston is known for its defense, and they have not disappointed this season. The team has four interceptions, seven fumble recoveries, and 10 sacks. Andre Hal leads the team with two interceptions, and Jadeveon Clowney looks to finally be living up to all the hype, as he has recorded three sacks this season.
Kansas City has looked very impressive so far this season but I’m afraid this is a bad spot for the Chiefs on Sunday night. Houston seems to have some momentum now after plugging Deshaun Watson in at quarterback. The Chiefs are playing this game on short rest and are banged up quite heavily on the offensive line. Eric Fisher has been dealing with back issues, Mitch Morse is out with a foot injury, Parker Ehinger has a knee issue and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif just suffered a knee injury that will keep him out. Clowney and Watt may give this offensive line fits and put a lot of pressure on Alex Smith. I think the Chiefs are the best team in football but this is a bad spot for a banged up team playing in Houston. I like the Texas in this matchup.
