The 2019–20 NBA season tips-off on Tuesday night with two games on the slate with the marquee matchup coming from Staples Center as the Los Angeles Lakers take on the Los Angeles Clippers. Both teams have revamped their roster starting with the Lakers trading for PF Anthony Davis while the Clippers signed FA Kawhi Leonard and traded for F Paul George. Both teams are expected to compete in the Western Conference for a championship.
After a down season, the Los Angeles Lakers didn’t waste any time retooling their roster for playoff contention. The Lakers traded for Anthony Davis to help LeBron James and provide one of the best 1–2 combos in the NBA and provide over 50 PPG for the Lakers offense. The defense will be a key component of Frank Vogel’s team this season and they loaded their bench with veteran role players such as Danny Green and Avery Bradley.
The Clippers traded away some key players before the trade deadline last season only to shock the NBA with a playoff run despite the trades. The Clippers stole headlines in the offseason by signing two-time NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard and trading for Paul George. However, the Clippers will be without Paul George on Tuesday who is dealing with a partially torn tendon in his right shoulder.
It’s difficult to gauge where each team will be on opening night but you can expect it to take some time for both teams to gel offensively and defensively. Neither team will be at full strength on Tuesday and you can expect to see some rust. I like Under 226 in this matchup as both teams will emphasize defense from the start of the season and I don’t expect either team to light up the scoreboard in the first outing.
