Los Angeles Rams vs San Francisco 49ers

Thursday, September 21st, 8:25 pm EST
NFL Prediction and Odds: 49ers +2, O/U 40

Los Angeles Rams

Thursday Night Football has not lived up to the hype since it’s inception. Small market teams playing in the national spotlight has been a bad recipe for success. This Thursday is not different with the Rans facing the 49ers, however, I do see an edge with the odds released by Vegas.

In Week 1 the Rams blew out the Colts, 46–9 behind QB Jarred Goff and a solid defensive performance. The Rams also covered the -3.5 point spread and the Total went over 41.5. In Week 2 the Rams had a let down and lost to the Redskins at home, 27–20 as -3 point favorites and the Total went over 46.5 points.

Jared Goff has looked pretty good but as a second year quarterback, he will make mistakes. The Rams defense is a head scratcher. They looked dominant vs a bad Colts team but they allowed the Redskins to score 27 and go all the way down the field for the game-winning touchdown. The Rams defense failed to stop the run vs the Redskins, allowing 229 rushing yards. The good news for the Rams is that DT Aaron Donald will be suiting up for his second game.

Rams Betting Trends

  • Rams are 1–4 ATS in their last 5 road games
  • Rams are 0–8–1 ATS in their last 9 vs. NFC
  • Under is 9–1 in Rams last 10 road games vs. a team with a losing home record

San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers have a 9% chance of making the playoffs now after starting (0–2). The Niners lost in Week 1 to the Carolina Panthers 23–3 and in Week 2 to the Seahawks 12–9. The 49ers offense has been inept and QB Brian Hoyer has no touchdowns and two interceptions through two games and he has a whopping QBR of 10.2.

San Francisco’s defense has been better than expected, allowing the ninth-fewest yards per game.

The 49ers have just 12 total points in the first two games with no touchdowns so they better play some solid defense. Unfortunately for Kyle Shanahan, his offense had to play against Carolina and Seattle, two elite defenses in their first two games.

49ers Betting Trends

  • 49ers are 4–0 ATS in their last 4 vs. NFC West
  • Under is 8–2 in 49ers last 10 Thursday games
  • Under is 21–8 in 49ers last 29 home games

Rams vs 49ers Prediction

Both teams will probably rush the ball upwards of 30 times on Thursday and if that happens, the score will stay low and tight. This could very well be another Thursday Night dud but I see this score staying Under 40. The total has gone UNDER in 6 of the 49ers’ last 8 games on Thursday. Carlos Hyde could have a big night vs this Rams rush defense which has failed to stop the run. I see both teams chewing up the clock with the run game which is why I like this game to go Under 40.

Rams vs 49ers Total Prediction: Under 40
