Maryland barely escaped an upset loss in their first game of the season, sneaking by American, 62–56. Georgetown had an easy blowout win in their season opener, but the win was expected beating an overmatched SC Upstate, 105–60.
Melo Trimble was the Terps leading scorer with 22 points and is currently the University of Maryland’s 3rd all time leading scorer entering the season. While Trimble scored 22 points, the Terrapins struggled from the field shooting just 38%. While Trimble missed all four of his 3-pointers he was a pretty good 9–19 from the field and only two other Maryland players had more than 12 points.
Georgetown had an easy warm up game with their win over SC Upstate. Georgetown’s leading scorer was Rodney Pryor who dropped 32 points in the win. Pryor, who transfers to Georgetown from Robert Morris University, was an All-Northeast Conference First Team selection in 2015–16, and was selected to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 18 Second Team. He finished his senior year at Robert Morris leading the Colonials in scoring and rebounding, averaging 18.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.
Last season Georgetown was only 2–8 facing ranked teams. They only lost to Maryland by four points on the road in the beginning of last season when the Terps were ranked 3rd in the country.
