The Indiana Hoosiers put up a good fight on the road last week in a losing effort vs. Penn State, 34–27 but the Hoosiers managed to cover the +15 point spread. Indiana will get another shot at a top-ranked team on Saturday when they host the #15 Michigan Wolverines. Michigan enters with their season on the rise and three-straight wins and 44–10 win over rival Michigan State last week.
The Wolverines (8–2, 6–4 ATS) continued their impressive play with a 34 point victory over their rival Sparty and covering the -13.5 point spread. Michigan has covered the spread in 6 of 7 and they appear to be improving as a team. Michigan has improved since its loss to Penn State, routing two of its rivals (Notre Dame and Michigan State). Michigan is anchored by a 5th ranked defense which allows 16.4 PPG and a minuscule 155 passing yards per game. But it’s been the offense that has stood out the most in recent games putting up no less than 38+ points in four of the last five games.
Indiana (7–3, 7–3 ATS) will need to rely on their passing game if they are going to move the ball on this Michigan defense. The Hoosiers currently rank 13th in the country in yards passing per game, but 103rd in yards per game on the ground, while averaging 33.3 PPG. Indiana outgained Penn State last week, 462 yards to 371 yards. However, the Indiana defense was scored on early, before settling in, and the offense played catch-up. Indiana’s defense is no slouch, allowing 21.4 PPG, 176 passing yards and 316 total yards.
Indiana has taken Michigan to overtime the last two times (2015, 2017) these teams have played at Memorial Stadium “The Rock”. The Wolverines have a matchup next weekend vs. Ohio State which could present a look-ahead spot for the Hoosiers. Michigan has looked impressive the past few weeks but Indiana seems to rise to the occasion while playing Michigan at home. Indiana clung to Penn State last weekend on the road, so I expect their offense and defense to be primed for the home crowd. The Underdog is 3–0–1 ATS in their last 4 meetings and the Wolverines are 2–6–1 ATS in their last 9 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. Back the Hoosiers at home.
