Minnesota Twins vs. Chicago White Sox
Date: July 24, 2020
Game Time: 8:10 pm
MLB Odds: White Sox +100, O/U 8.5
The Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox will take the field for opening day at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago. Minnesota is coming off a nice run in 2019, finishing the season with a 101–61 record and first place in the AL Central but they were outed by the Yankees in the Playoffs. Chicago finished the season 72–89 but they have higher expectations heading into the 2020 season with a young team that also improved in the offseason.
Two-time All-Star Jose Berrios (14–8, 3.68 ERA) will get the opening day nod for the Twins. Berrios went 4–1 last season vs. the White Sox as he looks to improve his team's odds of reaching the AL Playoffs for the second straight season. The Twins added a bat in the offseason with the acquisition of Josh Donaldson who will join a team that hit 307 home runs in 2019.
Chicago will hand the ball to Lucas Giolito in his first Opening Day start on Friday. Giolito pitched his way to 14–9 last season with a 3.41 ERA. Giolito finished 2–2 opposite Minnesota last summer while gaining little run support to aid mostly solid appearances. The Twins only roughed up Chicago’s ace once through several deep outings. Chicago is a team on everyone’s radar but they will need to take a step forward with their offensive production to keep pace with the Twins in the Central.
Minnesota (-125) has more favorable odds in this matchup with Berrios on the mound. The Twins offense coupled with a strong performance by Berrios will put Minnesota in the win column to start the season. Chicago has certainly improved in the offseason but they will need to prove it on the field. Take the Twins in Game 1 of this series.
