Minnesota Twins (53–30) vs Oakland Athletics (46–39)
Date: July 2, 2019
Game Time: 10:07 pm
MLB Odds: Twins -125 | Athletics +105, O/U 9.5
Two teams in the AL Playoff hunt will take the field in Oakland on Tuesday as the Athletics host the Minnesota Twins for Game 1 of a three-game series. The Twins are just 5–5 their last 10 games but they hold an 8.0 game lead over the Indians in the AL Central. Oakland is 13–5 over its last 18 contests but they enter this series 7.0 games behind Houston in the AL West.
Minnesota Twins: Jake Odorizzi (10–3, 2.73 ERA)
Oakland A’s: Daniel Mengden (2–1, 4.03 ERA)
The Twins had trouble with the Chicago White Sox over the weekend, losing two of three in the South Side of Chicago. Tonight, Minnesota will rely on newly minted All-Star RHP Jake Odorizzi who is tied for 2nd in the AL with 10 wins. Odorizzi is due for a bounce back after going 1–1 with a 6.46 ERA, a 1.57 WHIP, and 16 strikeouts over 15.1 innings in his last three starts. Odorizzi is 1–3 with a 2.95 ERA, 28 strikeouts over 36.2 innings in six career starts against the A’s. Joining Odorizzi at the All-Star Game will be SS Jorge Polanco who leads Minnesota with a .320 batting average and in hits with 105. As a team, the Twins are ranked at the top of MLB with a .270 batting average, .831 OPS, 157 home runs and they average 5.71 RPG.
Oakland won their third straight and their fifth in the last six games as they hammered the Angels in the finale of their set Sunday. The Athletics have won three straight games after scoring 24 runs in their previous series. Oakland is led offensively by Marcus Semien who has a .272 batting average and 95 hits. Matt Chapman leads the team in home runs with 21 and in RBIs with 52. As a team, the Athletics average 5.05 RPG, .247 batting average and 133 home runs. Oakland will send Daniel Mengden to the mound and he will make his 5th start on the season. Mengden picked up the win in his last start, vs the Cardinals Wednesday, throwing 6 scoreless frames, allowing four hits with a walk and five strikeouts in a 2–0 Oakland victory. This will be Mengden’s first career start vs the Minnesota Twins.
Minnesota has been one of the top teams in baseball all season and part of their success has come on the road with a 27–16 record. The Twins are 12–1 in Odorizzi’s last 13 starts and the Twins are 10–2 in their last 12 vs. American League West. Odorizzi is due for a bounce back after getting selected to the 2019 All-Star Game. Oakland has been playing solid baseball but they are just 3–7 in their last 10 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. I like the Twins -125 on the road on Tuesday night as they bounce back from losing two of three.
