First round action from the NCAA Tournament tips off in Milwaukee as the 5th seed Iowa State Cyclones take on the 12th seed Nevada Wolfpack. This Midwest region matchup tips off close to 10pm EST.
The Nevada Wolf Pack are 28–6 this year and winners of the Mountain West Conference regular season title and conference tournament. San Diego State seemed to control the Mountain West Conference in seasons past, but this season the Wolfpack controlled their destiny. Nevada was lead by Marcus Marshall, the go-to player on offense for Nevada. The 6–3 senior guard averages 19.8 points on 42.5 percent shooting.
The keys to victory for Nevada is hitting from beyond the arc and rebounding. Nevada hit 30.7 percent from 3-point range and average close to 39 offensive rebounds per game. The Wolfpack has been successful this season against the number which includes going 7–1 in neutral site games and 11–2 outside of the MWC. On the season they went (23–10–1 ATS).
Iowa State was a preseason favorite to be a surprise contender in the NCAA Tournament. A mediocre start to the season which saw them 15–9 (6–5 in Big 12 play) in early February, the Cyclones were finally able to collect themselves and go on an impressive 6 game winning streak at the end of conference play. They lost their season finale at West Virginia, but they got their revenge on the Mountaineers by beating them in the Big 12 title game. Iowa State has gone an impressive 8–2 against the spread in its last 10 games.
Monte Morris leads this Cyclones team averaging 16 PPG, 4 RPG and 6 assists per game. When he goes this Cyclones team goes. One of the strengths of this Iowa State team is they will not beat themselves. They commit very few turnovers and rarely commit unnecessary fouls. If this Cyclones are able to capitalize on the 3 pointer they are very tough to beat.
Iowa State is 6–1 in neutral site games this season and 8–4 in games they played outside of the Big 12.
I think this Nevada team is well equipped to be in this NCAA Tournament and compete with Iowa State. However, unfortunately for the Wolfpack they are running into a buzz saw in Iowa State. The Cyclones appear to be playing their best basketball on the season and I like them to win this game and cover the spread
