New York Yankees (40–18) New York Mets (27–32)
Time: Friday, June 8th, 7:10 PM EST
Current Odds: Mets +100, O/U 7
The New York Yankees and New York Mets will meet up in Queens for a weekend subway series. Friday’s matchup features a front line pitching matchup: Masahiro Tanaka (7–2, 4.79 ERA) will toe the slab for the Yankees and he will be opposed by Jacob deGrom (4–0, 1.49 ERA) for the Mets.
The Yankees have the second-best record in baseball but they sit a 0.5 game behind Boston in the AL East. New York and Boston have already run away with the AL East as the 3rd place Tampa Bay Rays are 14.0 games behind 1st place. The Yankees have one of their top pitchers on the moundtonight. Tanaka’s starts have been money for Yankees’ bettors, as the team has gone unbeaten over his last seven trips to the mound. In Tanaka’s last outing, however, he allowed four earned runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of action during an 8–5 road win over Baltimore on June 6th.
The Yankees have one of the top overall offenses in baseball. This lineup is a nightmare for opposing pitchers as they rank 1st with 5.59 RPG, 1st with 98 HRs, 1st with .803 OPS and 8th with a .255 team batting average.
The Mets have had a tough homestand, losing 6 straight games at Citi Field. The Mets enter this weekend series 4th in the NL East and 7.5 games behind the Nationals. The Mets look to Jacob deGrom to get them back in the win column. deGrom is 2–0 with a 1.42 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP in six starts here at Citi Field this season.
The Mets offense is one of the worst in the league, putting extra stress on their starting pitchers. New York ranks 28th in the league in scoring, putting up 3.92RPG, while also ranking 24th in hitting with a .233 team batting average and 25th in homers with 59.
Tanaka has not been a lockdown pitcher this year, allowing 19 runs in his last 6 starts. However, the Yankees pitching has the benefit of a top-ranked Yankees offense. The Mets pitchers aren’t so lucky. The Mets have no offense right now as they have scored just two total runs in their last four games and have averaged just 3.13 RPG at home on the year, plus they have averaged just 1.70 RPG in deGrom’s last three starts. I think this matchup sets up well for Tanaka and the Mets offense shouldn’t pose many problems for the veteran right-hander. deGrom is (4–0) on the season but he has suffered three straight no-decisions and 7 no-decisions on the season. Lack of run support will be an issue in tonight’s game for the Mets and I’ll back the Yankees (-120) as small favorites on the road.
