The 2019 Egg Bowl kicks off on Thanksgiving night and will feature a heated rivalry between the Ole Miss Rebels (+2.5) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (-2.5). The Away team has won the Egg Bowl for the past four years with the Bulldogs winning on the road last year, 35–3.
Ole Miss has the edge in rest as they enter this week off a BYE but they lost their last game vs. LSU, 58–37. Even though the Rebels got shredded defensively, their offense put on quite a show against the number one team in the country racking up 614 yards of offense, which should give them a ton of confidence for the Egg Bowl. Ole Miss has not had a good season but they have the 7th best rushing attack in the country which averages 261.5 yards per game on the ground. Their defense has been thrashed this year allowing an average of 27 points per game with the greatest weakness in the passing game (293 yards per game).
In terms of record, Mississippi State has more to play for as they need a win to become bowl eligible. The Bulldogs have gone just (2–5 SU) their last 7 games and yet they remain bowl eligible. Both teams have an identical (2–5) SEC conference record. Like the Rebels, Mississippi State’s strength on offense is their rushing attack which averages 228.5 yards per game, 28.2 PPG and 410 total yards per game. The Bulldogs defense has struggled this season and they enter this game allowing close to 150 rushing yards per game which will need to contend with a potent Rebels rushing attack.
Ole Miss scored 3 points in the 2018 Egg Bowl but I don’t see the Bulldogs holding the Rebels to 3 points this year. Both teams have similar strengths and weaknesses and both teams are weak defensively. I don’t expect the Rebels to lay down in this one as they have the potential to block the Bulldogs bowl bid with a win. While both teams may have struggled vs. top tier SEC programs, neither team will have an issue scoring. I expect both teams to put on a show in the national spotlight with no shortage of points.
